GARY BERG grew up in Montana, and his artwork has long been informed by the landscape of his birthplace, with it's vast yet intimate nature. Since receiving his MFA in Sculpture and Glassblowing from Ohio State University, where he was a graduate teaching associate, Berg has incorporated many varied techniques and materials in his work, favoring such mediums as glass, concrete, and reclaimed wood. Berg's work frequently maintains and focuses on a precarious balance, both thematically--between the natural and the man-made, life and death, presence and void--and literally, through the ways he has chosen to exploit as well as defy gravity. The found objects he incorporates into his work--cast together into thoughtful artworks with other media--give life to and gain new meaning from the sculptures they inhabit. They accentuate their own disposable nature along with that of contemporary society, and hover in the balance between preservation and destruction. Berg currently resides north of Seattle, Washington.
